The most popular 4x4 tour in Reykjavík

Try driving an iconic Land Rover Defender on fun and challenging 4x4 trails, only 15 minutes from Reykjavík City Centre.

Reykjavík City is surrounded by 4x4 trails with beautiful views of rugged lava fields, big mountains and towering volcanoes, rivers, woodlands and lush farmland valleys. The trails are located only a few minutes drive from downtown Reykjavík and offer fun and challenging 4x4 trail driving with river crossings and natural obstacle courses.

We begin the tour with a brief welcome at the Volcano Trails head office and an introduction about how to drive the Defenders. Following the introduction, each group gets their own private Land Rover Defender to drive on the trails.

With everyone ready in their seats, our guide will lead the convoy of jeeps onto the trails where we get to test our driving skills in fun and challenging off-road conditions with river crossings, hill climbs, and obstacle courses.

A stop is made halfway to switch drivers, take pictures and enjoy the views of the beautiful landscape surrounding Reykjavík city. Our guides select the trails daily depending on weather and trail conditions, allowing for the best possible driving experience on each tour.

Handheld radios are in each jeep for the guide to deliver information and for the participants to communicate with the guide and the rest of the group in the other cars. Feel free to use the radio for a bit of extra fun!

This tour is ideal for groups, individuals, couples, and families and is available all year, in any kind of weather. We do recommend bringing warm clothes with wind and waterproof outer layer, a hat, gloves and good shoes, especially outside the summer months of June, July and August.

Select our pickup and dropoff service from hotels and locations in Reykjavík when you book the tour or arrive at our meeting point with your own car or private taxi. This tour can also be booked as a private tour for individuals, families and groups.

What is a Convoy tour?

A convoy tour is where more than one car travel together behind a guide that leads the other cars along a set trail. A convoy can consist of two cars and more. Sometimes we have only one car following the guide but when we have larger groups with more than 5 self-drive cars we add more guide cars for safety.

What kind of cars do we get to drive?

We use the original Land Rover Defenders on this tour as this is one of the best 4x4 vehicles ever made and great fun to drive.

Read more about our Defenders in "Our fleet of Defenders"

Can I drive?

Yes, this is a guided self-drive tour where anyone (17 years or older) with a valid driver's license can drive our Defenders on this tour.

Two persons in each car can alternate driving. Our driver-guide leads the group in a separate vehicle in front of yours and chooses a minimum of one stop per tour to alternate drivers.

Can I join if I do not want to drive?

If you do not want to drive yourself then you can choose to sit in the car with the guide on this tour. Simply choose "seats in guiding vehicle" when you book this tour.

How many can join?

This tour is ideal for individuals, families and groups of various sizes. Each jeep has room for up to 7 people including the driver.

If you have more people in your group you can add more jeeps as you need when you book.

You can also choose to book seats for passengers in the guiding vehicle we have on this tour.

What if we have more people than fit in one car but do not want to drive more than one car?

If you have more than 7 people in your group you can add more vehicles to your booking or you can book seats for the extra passengers in the guide car. For example - a group of 10 people could book 2 self-drive vehicles with 5 people each, or book one self-drive car with 7 seats + 3 passenger seats in the guide vehicle.

Is this tour safe?

We work according to strict safety standards and our guides have years of experience leading groups in 4x4 excursions. The guide chooses the trails we drive daily according to weather and conditions to ensure safety and best driving experience. Our vehicles go through daily inspection and each seat is fitted with a seatbelt. Child seats are available for children.
