Drive the F249 trail to Þórsmörk
Tour overview
The F249 Þórsmörk Volcano Trail offers exciting 4x4 Land Rover Defender self-drive with beautiful views and natural landmarks that line the foothills of the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier & Volcano. The F249 is one of the most famous F-mountain Roads in Iceland with multiple streams and rivers carving their way down from the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier and through the road itself on their way to meet with the larger tributaries and on to the sea. Many beautiful sites are found along the foothills of the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier & Volcano. From Nauthúsagil Canyon, Merkurker, Fossinn Waterfall and Gígjökull Outlet Glacier, to name a few. The trail leads us from the Seljalandsfoss waterfall through placid farmlands and onwards to the more rugged F249 mountain road where the 4x4 capabilities of the Land Rover Defender really come in handy.
The first river crossing on the F249 road is a small stream leading you on to cross larger rivers on your way further up the road to Gígjökull Glacier, the main sightseeing stop. The Gígjökull Glacier outlet is a massive glacier tongue, calving from the 1.650 meters high Eyjafjallajökull Glacier & Volcano. This is the site where during the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull Volcanic Eruption, a massive flood of melting glacier water came rushing down from the glacier, causing floods of epic proportions in the valley and farmlands below. The tour gives time to stop and admire the aftermath of the most famous volcanic eruptions the world has seen. On our way back we drive the same trail but turn off the F249 and take a detour through an old scenic 4x4 track, passing through the driveway of one of the local dairy farms in the area. From there we return back to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall where we started the journey. Coffee and refreshments are available at the reception once we return.
