Departing from Hvolsvöllur or Brú Base nearby Seljalandsfoss
Þórsmörk is one of the most visited nature reserves by locals in Iceland and the area is well known for its natural beauty and stunning views. Getting here is an adventure in itself and on our way into the nature reserve, we drive our modified 4x4 Superjeep through the beautiful landscape with towering glaciers and volcanoes all around. The Superjeep drive includes the crossing of multiple glacial streams and rivers that flow from underneath the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier and carve the valley all the way to the ocean on the south coast of Iceland.
On our way, we get to view the effects of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption and visit the Gígjökull glacier where the evidence from the eruption is clearly visible. From there we head further into Þórsmörk, crossing the famous Krossá River on our way. In Þórsmörk we have a light lunch at the Volcano Huts followed by an optional walk to enjoy the best views of the area before heading back on our Superjeep truck.
This tour combines the adventurous off-road drive with the serenity and scenic beauty of the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve and the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier & Volcano. The tour starts from the Hamragarðar campsite but you can also choose a pick-up service from hotels and accommodations in the area. A Superjeep is a modified 4x4 truck with larger tires, snorkel and other features that enable it to drive along 4x4 trails, across rivers and through deep snow. Superjeeps are frequently used as passenger vehicles as they allow you to access some of the most hard to reach places in the Icelandic highlands.
