Into the Highlands: Everything You Need to Know About Getting to Volcano Huts

Located in the secluded Húsadalur Valley in the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve, Volcano Huts offers a true escape off Iceland’s beaten path. Getting here is part of the adventure, as the route follows the rugged F249 mountain road, where gravel tracks and unbridged glacial rivers shape the journey through dramatic landscapes.

Þórsmörk is flanked by the glaciers Tindafjallajokull, Myrdalsjokull and the slumbering Eyjafjallajökull volcano, their icy ash strewn slopes setting the tone for the wild, unforgettable experience ahead. Traveling into the reserve, the landscape unfolds into wide, untouched wilderness, filled with calming green hues—a peaceful sanctuary of moss, lichen, ferns, and birch trees, existing in the slow, ancient rhythm of nature.

Some locations are worth planning your trip around, and Þórsmörk Nature Reserve is one of those places. There are a few ways to reach Volcano Huts, and below you’ll find an overview of the available options, along with important information to help you plan your journey safely.

Getting to Volcano Huts: Your Options

  1. Highland Bus (recommended)
  2. Drive as far as Krossá and hike into Húsadalur (F-road approved jeeps)
  3. Book a private 4x4 tour or transfer to Þórsmörk

1. Highland Bus (Recommended)

Getting here is part of the adventure!

The Highland Bus offers a unique and scenic journey into Þórsmörk, crossing rivers and traveling through some of Iceland’s most remote and beautiful landscapes. It’s a comfortable and reliable way to reach this off-the-grid destination—no need to worry about navigating the highland terrain yourself.

We work with trusted transport partners to provide this service so you can simply sit back and enjoy the ride.

Please note that the Highland Bus is not included in your accommodation and must be booked separately.

Where to catch the bus:

  • Hvolsvöllur (N1 Gas Station): A convenient option for travelers driving along the South Coast. Parking is currently free. View on the map here.
  • Brú Base (Road 249): Located about 5 km past Seljalandsfoss. Free parking is available for bus passengers. View on the map here.
  • Reykjavik BSÍ: The main terminal for buses traveling into the Highlands. Conveniently located near the city center, it offers easy access for those staying in Reykjavík without a rental car. View on the map here.

With several designated pick-up points available, you can choose the location that best fits your travel plans. View bus schedules and book tickets here.

2. Drive to Krossá and Hike into Húsadalur

A rugged highland drive with unbridged river crossings, followed by a rewarding hike into Húsadalur.

For those looking for a more adventurous option, you can drive along F249, crossing several smaller rivers and streams along the way, until you reach the Krossá River—where you’ll continue on foot to Volcano Huts.

This option requires a 4x4 vehicle that is approved for F-roads. However, even with the appropriate vehicle, it is not possible to drive all the way to Húsadalur. The Krossá River must not be crossed due to strong currents and rapidly changing conditions.

In the summer months (June-Sept), footbridges are installed over the Krossá River between Langidalur and Básar, approximately 30 km along F249. From the bridge, the hike to Volcano Huts is about 6 km.

Please be aware:

  • The bridge location can change depending on river conditions
  • In some cases, the bridge may be temporarily removed due to flooding
  • Reaching the bridge may involve crossing shallow water

Important Driving Information

Driving in the highlands requires preparation—please review the following information before your journey.

Driving on F-roads in Iceland requires preparation and careful consideration.

  • A 4x4 vehicle approved for F-roads is mandatory
  • River crossings can be hazardous and should not be underestimated
  • Most rental insurance policies do not cover water damage to vehicles. Guests should ensure their vehicle is suitable for highland conditions, carefully assess the risks of driving on F-roads, and obtain appropriate insurance coverage before their journey.
  • Check the conditions of F-roads through the Icelandic Road & Coastal Administration
  • Observe weather conditions through the Icelandic Met Office in preparation for your trip

If you are unsure about road conditions or your vehicle’s capabilities, we recommend choosing the Highland Bus or a guided tour instead.
